There are plenty of reasons visitors flock to Denver in winter, but the Mile High City is an entertaining place to be year round. With the majority of the year consisting of sunny days, Denver is a summer-lover’s dream. For days when you’re looking to relax and enjoy the outdoors without venturing far from the city, you have a variety of options. Here are some great ways to spend a summer day in Denver:
There are countless farmers’ markets across the city that come into full swing in the summer months, each with its own unique feel and delicious selection of fresh produce to scoop up. While each has its own draw, some are particularly festive and have become entertainment destinations. You can expect things like scrumptious baked goods and prepared foods alongside live music and other entertainment. You’ll likely be able to find a market close to where you live, but there are also a couple that are not to be missed. The Old South Pearl Street Farmers’ Market happens on Sundays from 9am-1pm. Some of their markets are planned special events, like their upcoming Healing Fest on June 17th and the Bike-O-Rama on July 15th. Another award-winning market to browse is the Cherry Creek Fresh Market, which occurs Saturdays from 8am-1pm and Wednesdays from 9am-1pm. This is the largest market in Denver, and it has a great mix of local, farm-fresh produce, flowers, and gourmet products. No matter which markets you choose to attend, you’re sure to find a vibrant scene of fresh food and family-friendly activities.
Another summer rite of passage is to savor some quality ice cream under the hot sun. You could join the crowds at Little Man, but there are several other ice cream shops that are worth a visit as well. Sweet Action is an ice cream parlor where you can expect local, natural ingredients and unique flavors, like their Stranahan’s Whiskey Brickle, made with Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey and butter brickle toffee candy. Having been around for more than 30 years, Bonnie Brae Ice Cream is a neighborhood spot with history. With over 80 homemade flavors to choose from, they have plenty to please ice-cream enthusiasts of all ages. For a different twist, Linger serves up exotic Taiwanese shaved ice — a frozen treat similar to granita and customized with unique ingredients.
One of the best ways to get outside in the city is to spend the day at Confluence Park. A Denverite favorite, this park is host to all kinds of outdoor activities. Some prefer a slower-paced day lounging at the sandy river’s edge, while others like to adventure in the rapids of the South Platte River by kayak. Plenty of visitors picnic or plan a day of cycling here as well. This scenic urban park is located where Cherry Creek and the South Platte River meet, and it offers beautiful panoramic views of downtown Denver. Best of all, this green space is just steps away from great dining and drinks downtown, so visitors can easily plan an afternoon and evening.
If you’re craving carnival food or a thrilling roller coaster ride, Elitch Gardens Theme Park is an amusement park that’s conveniently located in downtown Denver. Here, you can spend an evening or an entire day reliving your childhood. They even have a water park for those sweltering summer days. Within their Island Kingdom Water Park, they host “Dive-in” movies on Friday nights from June 29th to Aug 3rd, where you and your family can enjoy a movie from the Wave Pool. For a more scenic amusement park, Lakeside Amusement Park is worth the trip. It’s within 10 miles of downtown Denver and has a wonderful lakeside location with scenic mountain views. Opened in 1908, this quintessential summer amusement park offers a glimpse into history. Find a thrill-seeking friend to join you on one of their many roller coasters.
If you’re feeling nostalgic, there are two drive-in theaters in the Denver metro area to transport you back in time. Open since 1972, the 88 Drive-In Theatre is a great place to spend a relaxing summer night. This spot is located in Henderson, and it’s the last remaining original drive-in in the Denver metro area. The Denver Mart Drive-In is a newer theatre located on E 58th Ave. Both theatres screen first-run studio films. Denver Mart Drive-In hosts double features, and The 88 hosts triple features.
Aside from the many exciting festivals and cultural happenings around the city, there are even more simple activities to engage in for a true Denver summer experience. Whether you’re more of a thrill-seeker, or you’re looking for ways to relax, the Mile High City is a great place to enjoy your summer.
