Number Of Single Households Reaches All Time High

Nearly 27 percent of the nation’s households are made up of people who live alone, according to an Associated Press analysis of 2010 census data. Among that 27 percent, more women than men live alone, in part due to the fact that older women tend to outlive their husbands. The rate of single households is unprecedented in U.S. history, according to sociologist Michael Rosenfeld. Rosenfeld credits the rise in affluence and college educated young adults, in addition to women in the workforce for the rise of independent living. North Dakota had the highest percentage of single households at 31.5 percent. Utah was lowest at 18.7 percent. More here.
