Colorado has much to offer in terms of a good road trip, and Denver as your starting point gives you plenty of interesting towns and cities to explore. Glenwood Springs

Only a few hours from Denver, a visit to Glenwood Springs makes for a relaxing weekend. Though there are many exciting activities to enjoy in this historic town, the major attraction is the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool. It’s the largest hot spring-fed pool in the world, and it contains the same purifying minerals you’ll find in the district’s natural hot springs. You’ll definitely want to take a dip during your weekend away. They also have a quaint Main Street to explore and abundant quintessential Colorado scenery. For adventurous souls, there’s whitewater rafting opportunities as well as nearby hiking and mountain biking. Be sure to make time to visit the Glenwood Canyon. It’s a gorgeous drive and has plenty of trails to explore. If you’re bringing kids along with you, the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, a mountain-top theme park, is a perfect activity for the whole family. After a long day, check out Glenwood Canyon Brewpub for a fun atmosphere and hand-crafted beer.

 

Aspen

Aspen is a must-visit for Denverites and tourists alike. At less than 4 hours from Denver, this classic ski-town won’t leave you disappointed. If you’re making a winter road trip, the world-class skiing is the main attraction. For those taking the journey in warmer months, Aspen offers plenty of other ways to enjoy your weekend. For hiking, the trails around Maroon Bells boast a stunning lake panorama reflecting the two massive snow-capped mountains. If you really want to soak up the Colorado scenery, ride the Silver Queen Gondola up Aspen Mountain where they often host mountaintop summer yoga classes and live music. Aspen also has the potential to be a luxury weekend getaway, with plenty of upscale dining spots and a multitude of boutiques downtown.

 

Gateway Canyons

For a weekend of indulgence surrounded by Colorado’s natural beauty, head just under 5 hours west to Gateway Canyons Resort and Spa. Known for being a romantic destination resort, this is the perfect spot to unwind from city life for a few days. This resort rests at the base of five different scenic canyons, making it a beautiful and unique spot. The full-service resort was created in 2004 by Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks. Guests can elect to participate in Palisade Ranch activities like horseback rides through the Unaweep Canyon, cattle drives, and cowboy lessons. They also have hiking, climbing and biking opportunities among the canyons. If you’re ready to treat yourself to a luxurious weekend away, this is the place to go.

 

Palisade

Palisade, a Western-Slope town at the heart of Colorado’s Grand Valley, makes for a great long-weekend destination. It’s especially well-known for the many festivals it hosts, like the popular Palisade Peach Festival celebrating the vast bounty of peaches harvested each August. They’re also known for local wine, with over 20 small wineries to tour and taste in the area as well as the Peach Street Distillers in town. They’ll host their annual Colorado Mountain Winefest this September 2018 from the 13-16th, so wine aficionados may want to make their road-trip plans accordingly. Expect plenty of roadside fruit stands in the warmer months and a charming downtown, all just under 4 hours from the Mile High.

 

South Fork

For a weekend of adventuring, head 4 hours southwest of Denver to South Fork, a small, unassuming mountain town at the confluence of the South Fork and Rio Grande rivers. Though small in size and population, it’s full-time residents are committed to outdoor recreation. Here you can expect to find a beautiful town that serves as a perfect base camp for days filled with hiking, biking, and backpacking in the Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado’s largest wilderness area. You can also fish in the Rio Grande River or try your hand at fly-fishing with a guide. In the winter, there’s plenty of skiing and snowmobiling opportunities in the area. Deemed “Colorado’s Top Small Adventure Town” by Elevation Outdoors in 2015, this destination makes for an adventurous weekend trip.
